What Is Flown?
Flighty, for pilots.
Flown is an iPhone app for general aviation pilots, whether student, private, recreational, or hour-building. It records a flight from your pocket, shares it live with the people who care, and keeps a logbook worth looking back on. It is currently in closed beta with pilots at my flight school, Brampton Flight Centre.
Why Flown Exists
When an airliner takes off, anyone can follow it on a flight tracking app. When a student pilot takes a Cessna out for a cross-country, the people waiting on the ground often see nothing at all. Many general aviation aircraft do not carry ADS-B Out transponders, so they never show up on the public trackers friends and family would normally check.
Flown was built for that gap. The pilot already has a phone in their pocket. Flown turns it into the tracker, so a parent, partner, or friend can open a calm live view of the flight instead of waiting for a text that says the plane is back on the ground.
What The Product Does
For pilots, Flown is one tap to start. It records the flight with GPS that keeps going even with no signal, detects takeoff and landing on the phone, and turns every flight into a smart logbook entry: hours, distance, spend, aircraft, and airports, all without filling in a single column by hand.
For the people following along, Flown shows a live map written in plain language: airborne, en route, landed, not raw numbers. Followers see an ETA, how fresh the position is, and a Dynamic Island and Lock Screen card for the flight they are watching. Flown also transcribes ATC radio live, so student pilots can keep up with communications in a busy cockpit and catch the call they almost missed.
Built For The Cockpit
Flown is a companion to ForeFlight and Garmin Pilot, not a replacement. It never navigates, never asks for your attention in the air, and labels every phone-derived reading as exactly that. The pilot flies the plane. Flown quietly does the bookkeeping.
Under the hood, the phone always records first. The app is built in SwiftUI with Apple MapKit, Core Location, and Core Motion, and SwiftData is the source of truth on device. Sharing runs on Supabase with Postgres, Realtime, and Row Level Security, so followers see exactly the pilots they follow, enforced in the database. The network only ever improves sharing, and never decides whether a flight gets recorded.
The Bigger Mission
Flying is one of the most rewarding things I do, and it is better when the people you care about can come along for the ride. Flown exists to make general aviation feel a little less invisible and a lot more shareable.
The long-term goal is to give every pilot, from their first solo to their thousandth hour, a simple way to record, share, and look back on their flying. Set up, start, fly, share, land, review, and log.
